If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the book “Jordanoff's Illustrated Aviation Dictionary” would be worth 2,057,000 words as it contains 2057 black and white illustrations covering technical and general aeronautical terms – aerobatics, aerodynamics, aerostation, meteorology, navigation, radio, stress analysis, etc. and in the Appendix a glossary of Aviation “Slanguage” which is “Slang used by American and British Flying Forces”. Published in 1942 by Harper & Brothers Publishers of New York, Francis H. Royer was the Art Director. With all the recognized aeronautical terms for both commercial and military aircraft, it is a classic that any aviator or aviation enthusiast would love.
Assen “Jerry” Jordanoff (1896 – 1967) was a Bulgarian born and considered to be the founder of aeronautical engineering in Bulgaria and after coming to the US (speaking no English) became a major contributor to the development of aviation in the United States. He occupied a distinct place among the pilots of his time (the golden age of the airmanship) as he gained legendary status for his many roles as test pilot, airmail and taxi pilot, stunt pilot and flying instructor. He was an inventor before his time as well as working as an engineer for a number of large aviation companies. He produced instruction books and manuals for famous airplanes and was also well known for his numerous educational publications on aeronautics. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum holds his papers and mementoes.
Condition: Blue/white cloth boards with white bold text on the cover and spine. The spine has sun fading and wear to the cloth at the top and bottom of the back strip. The cover boards have fading along the top edge and with some slight blemishes to the front and rear boards but with limited edgewear. Corners are lightly bumped and the cloth has worn through to boards. The spine is straight, binding is tight and hinges are sound with no cracking to the endpapers. Text block is solid with all pages firmly attached but is loose within the boards. Age tanning throughout.
